How your take-home pay is worked out
Your employer deducts PAYE (pay-as-you-earn income tax) and UIF from your gross salary each month. This calculator annualises your salary, subtracts tax-deductible retirement contributions (up to 27.5% of income, capped at R430 000 a year), applies the SARS 2026/27 tax tables, then subtracts your rebates and medical scheme tax credits.

Frequently asked questions
How much tax do I pay on R30 000 a month?
If you're under 65 with no medical aid or retirement contributions, PAYE on R30 000 a month is about R4 681, and UIF is R177.12, leaving roughly R25 142 take-home. Enter your own figures above for an exact estimate.
What is the tax-free threshold in South Africa?
For the 2026/27 tax year you pay no income tax on income up to R99 000 a year if you're under 65, because the primary rebate cancels out the tax on that amount.
Why is my payslip different from this calculator?
Payroll systems handle bonuses, travel allowances, fringe benefits and mid-year salary changes differently. This calculator assumes the same salary every month for a full tax year.
Does a raise push all my income into a higher bracket?
No. South Africa uses marginal tax brackets, so only the portion of income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate.
