How to calculate VAT in South Africa
The standard VAT rate in South Africa is 15%.
- Add VAT: multiply the VAT-exclusive price by 1.15. R1 000 × 1.15 = R1 150.
- Remove VAT: divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.15. R1 150 ÷ 1.15 = R1 000.
- VAT portion of an inclusive price: multiply by 15 and divide by 115.
A common mistake is subtracting 15% from an inclusive price. That gives R977.50 instead of R1 000, because the 15% was added to the smaller, exclusive amount.
